Conway鈥檚 defense played well enough to get the Tigers鈥 season started in the right direction, but a sputtering offense and several untimely penalties cost Head Coach Josh Pierce鈥檚 group a chance to start the season with a notch in the win column.
The Tigers dropped Friday night鈥檚 season-opener to Wilson, 13-9, in a similar fashion to last year鈥檚 Week 0 matchup, when Conway fell 18-12 to Wilson.
Conway鈥檚 nine points came on three field goals from junior Brantley Hall. The Tigers had several chances on positive drives, but penalties, several dropped passes and mental miscues helped Wilson squeak out the road victory.
鈥淚 was proud of the way we played. We played well enough to win that game; we just made too many mistakes,鈥 Pierce said, commenting on drive-stalling penalties and miscues. 鈥淏ut credit to [Wilson], they made plays. They made plays, and we didn鈥檛 make plays. That鈥檚 what it boiled down to.鈥
Conway鈥檚 defense allowed a lengthy touchdown drive in the first quarter to surrender a 7-3 lead to Wilson, a score that was followed on the next Conway possession by a dropped backwards pass from QB Noah Legg. The ball was recovered by Wilson, which capitalized with another quick score to go up, 13-3, before the Tigers defense could catch a breath.

Wilson's Myquan White scores his second touchdown of the game despite the efforts of Conway defender Dennis Green (13) with 13.9 seconds left in the first quarter at Conway Friday night, Aug. 22, 2025. The score gave Wilson a 13-3 lead.
But once they did, Pierce鈥檚 defense showcased what many had seen all summer: the unit is much improved from a year ago.
The group settled down and Hall booted a total of three successful field goal attempts 鈥 two from 35 yards and another from 33 yards 鈥 to keep Conway in the game despite an offensive attack that struggled to find rhythm much of the night.
鈥淚鈥檒l be honest with you, their offense is electric. We saw them play last week [in a scrimmage] and we knew they had a lot of speed over there. I was concerned. The magic number in my head was 21,鈥 Pierce said, referring to the number of points he felt his team needed to hold Wilson to in order to win the game. 鈥淚 thought our defense did well, but we just made too many mistakes on both sides of the ball.鈥

Two Conway defenders close in on Wilson wide receiver Myquan White while he awaits a pass during first quarter action at Conway High School on Friday, Aug. 22, 2025. White would make the catch putting Wilson in scoring position inside the 10 yard line.
Many of those mistakes came from Conway鈥檚 offense, which never looked fully in sync throughout the opener. Legg had some success in the short passing game with quick strikes to Javon Smalls and Jordan Jenkins, but deep threats never materialized.
Conway had several chances with the ball in their hands late 鈥 including a two-minute drill opportunity at game鈥檚 end 鈥 but Wilson鈥檚 defense outmatched Conway up front and didn鈥檛 allow for any sustained success throughout the night.
After the loss, Pierce said he knew offensive line inexperience and size would be a concern. The Tigers do not return an offensive lineman this year who received significant starting reps in 2024.
鈥淓veryone is going to be bigger than us up front,鈥 Pierce said. 鈥淲e made some mistakes early on, but I don鈥檛 have anybody who started last year. One kid played a little H-Back for us, but now he鈥檚 playing center. So we do have some inexperience up front, and we knew it would be an issue. It came to bite us a little bit, especially in the two-minute drill when we couldn鈥檛 get a pass off.
鈥淚 think at this point in the season, defenses are always going to be a little bit more ahead of schedule than offenses. We have to shore up some things up front. And the quarterback has to make the right decisions, and there were several times tonight when he didn鈥檛. We鈥檙e going to put some heat on them in practice on Monday.鈥

Despite a solid defensive effort by Conway during their opening game of the 2025 season, the Tigers fell to the visiting Wilson Tigers 13-9 at the Backyard on Friday, August 22, 2025.
Conway鈥檚 defense didn鈥檛 surrender a point through the final three quarters of play, but the Tigers offense never found the end zone, failing to find a big play before Wilson closed things out with a defensive stand on the final drive of the game.
The Tigers will host Loris Friday, Aug. 29, at 7:30 p.m.
The Lions, a 2024 Class 3A lower state finalist, knocked off Class 1A Green Sea Floyds in their Week 0 matchup 56-7.
Pierce said the message to his team is simple 鈥 it鈥檚 time to get back to work.
鈥淟isten, the motto of our program is 鈥榗lock in鈥,鈥 the coach said. 鈥淲e鈥檙e going to come in here and go to work every day, regardless of the situation. The biggest thing for us next week is that we have to believe. They have to keep rowing the boat and stay the course. They鈥檝e worked too hard to just roll over.
鈥淚鈥檓 going to go home tonight and get to work. We鈥檙e going to meet as a staff tomorrow at 8 a.m. because there ain鈥檛 no quit in us.鈥
