Robbie Centracchio will be hanging another banner in Shark Park.
The St. James baseball head coach watched his team close out a sweep of Carolina Forest on Friday night, a 3-2 win that officially clinched the Sharks鈥 region title. Because of the team鈥檚 series win over Sumter earlier in the year, St. James has the edge over the rest of its region foes and will finish at the top of Region V-5A.
The region win is the first for the Sharks since 2019.
After watching his team celebrate with a banner in right field after Friday鈥檚 win, Centracchio told his team it had 鈥渂een too long.鈥
鈥淚t鈥檚 been a while. And for me, it鈥檚 exciting to see that we have a group that wants to [raise a banner],鈥 Centracchio said. 鈥淭here are teams out there that want individual goals. So, it鈥檚 good to see our group really, really buy into wanting to win these big goals. And this is just one of them, man. We have three more after this that we feel like we are in a good position to go after. So we鈥檙e excited.鈥
The Sharks trailed early against the Panthers before senior CJ Cilino 鈥 who was one of St. James鈥 seniors honored during the night鈥檚 Senior Night celebration 鈥 cracked a two-out, two-RBI single in the bottom of the second to give St. James the lead.
Carolina Forest would tie the game, but senior Keagan Brown鈥檚 perfect backside piece of hitting led to a St. James run in the fourth inning, giving the Sharks a 3-2 lead that the team would end up keeping.

After the game, Centracchio praised Cilino and Brown as being two of his senior leaders that his team has leaned on throughout an impressive season in 2024.
鈥淜eagan and CJ have just been leaders all day, every day,鈥 the coach said. 鈥淭hose two have been our vocal leaders since day one back in August. Our guys line up with what they have to say. For us, it鈥檚 like having coaches in the field and in the dugout. It鈥檚 rare to have two on a team, but they are both tremendous leaders and they have been a big difference for us, that鈥檚 for sure.鈥
After the win, Brown 鈥 who is committed to play baseball in college at Coker 鈥 struggled to find the words to describe the journey of the team鈥檚 year up to this point.
鈥淭his all started back in August,鈥 Brown said. 鈥淭his didn鈥檛 start at the beginning of the season. We all have worked so hard, we鈥檝e come together and we鈥檝e bonded. This is so fun. I really can鈥檛 put it into words.鈥
With the win, St. James improved to 10-1 in region play. The team swept Carolina Forest and Socastee in region series. It will have the opportunity to do the same to Conway next week when it plays a rescheduled game three at home on Monday night.
Carolina Forest made noise late in the game on offense, but Sharks junior Jacob Herrick closed out the win for the Sharks.
St. James will finish up its regular season next week before the 5A state playoffs begin on Tuesday, April 30.
鈥淭his was a good confidence boost, but we have to lock things back now,鈥 Cilino said after the win. 鈥淲e have some positive energy, but we can鈥檛 let the moment get too big.鈥
Carolina Forest softball checks off big win over St. James
Carolina Forest is firmly in the hunt for a No. 2 finish in Region V-5A, and their chances of locking up that spot improved greatly with a win over St. James on Friday.
The Panthers knocked off the Sharks, 3-0, in what could act as a key result in the final region standings.
There is still softball to be played next week for Carolina Forest 鈥 a game against Conway on Tuesday will help determine what the final region results will be. But even still, the Panthers celebrated plenty after the win over St. James, which locked up the region championship earlier this week.

鈥淭hat鈥檚 a big mental win for us,鈥 said Carolina Forest head coach Richard Howard. 鈥淲e have not beaten St. James since I have been here [in 2022]. We were 0-8 against them coming into this game. So, this is hopefully a big momentum thing that gets us moving forward. And what a great time to do it, right before the playoffs start and a really pivotal game against Conway next week. This coudn鈥檛 have happened at a better time.鈥
Carolina Forest freshman pitcher Kaysen Warehime turned in a standout performance on Friday, tossing a complete-game shutout against the region鈥檚 top team.
鈥淚 had a lot of fun tonight,鈥 Warehime said. 鈥淭hey are a really good hitting team, so I really had to have my best stuff against them. This is just really exciting to come out here and win.鈥
Among the night鈥檚 highlights for Carolina Forest was a two-run home run from Mady Eason, who is in eighth grade.
鈥淪he is such a good kid,鈥 Howard said of Eason. 鈥淚n practice, she does that all the time鈥 To see her succeed right there, I was just super excited for her.鈥
