Socastee got swept by rival St. James during the regular season.
With everything on the line Friday night, April 25, Socastee flipped the script upside down and made history.
Brooke Bushnoe led the way with four goals, the Braves took control early in the game and upset the Lower State No. 1 seed 10-5 in the second round of the 5A Division 1 state playoffs.
鈥淭he girls understood the assignment,鈥 said Socastee coach Hampton Campbell. 鈥淲e told them what we needed to do to win. They believed in it and executed it the best we鈥檝e ever done this year.鈥

Socastee defenders swarm St. James player Gracie Coggins, forcing a turnover聽against St. James on Friday, April 25, 2025.聽
It was the first-ever second round win for Socastee in girls lacrosse and it earned the Braves a berth in the Lower State championship game on Monday at second-seeded Lucy Beckham.
鈥淲e made history today,鈥 Campbell said. 鈥淭hese 26 girls are the only ones at Socastee to get past the second round. Now we can make more history Monday night in the Lower State championship.鈥
The Braves (10-8) won most of the early possessions, moved out to a 5-0 lead in the second quarter and were never threatened. The teams essentially traded goals the rest of the way and St. James (13-3) didn鈥檛 get closer than four goals.

Socastee goalkeeper Isabella Barisoff makes a save against St. James on Friday, April 25, 2025.聽
St. James, the Beach Region champion, beat Socastee 17-9 on March 27 and 19-14 on April 14.
鈥淲e grew so much after playing them,鈥 Bushnoe said. 鈥淲e knew what we had to work on. We executed in practice and we did the same thing on the field. I feel like we grew as a team together and that helped us win.鈥
And they were confident.
鈥淲e just had to show up,鈥 said freshman middle/attacker Emma Kerr. 鈥淓ven though they beat us, we still felt in our hearts that we could win. We showed up and we showed we can beat them.鈥
Kathryn Keim scored two goals while Paige Mayhew, Carolina McNelis, Payton Dowdy and Kerr all had one. Goalkeeper Isabella Barisoff made eight saves, some of which were difficult.
Defense was crucial, too.
St. James has several attackers who can score but the Braves crossed them up with a bit of cunning from Campbell, who applied some of his basketball coaching principles.
鈥淲hen we played them in the regular season, we didn鈥檛 play them the way we played them tonight,鈥 Campbell said. 鈥淲e saved that for tonight. We packed it in a zone, like in basketball. We crowded the spaces, making it difficult for them to get scoring opportunities.鈥
Campbell also coaches boys basketball at Socastee.
Raegan Ashley got three goals for the Sharks but leading scorer Mia Andre was held to one.
The Braves scored their first goal at the 6:32 mark and two more goals followed in short order.
Bushnoe鈥檚 goal with 6:03 left in the first half gave Socastee a 5-0 lead and the Braves were firmly in control.
When it was over they raced down the field toward Barisoff and celebrated.
Now they can get the chance to play for a berth in the state championship game.
鈥淚 think it鈥檚 amazing,鈥 Kerr said.
Socastee had advanced by overwhelming North Myrtle Beach 20-1 in the first round as Bushnoe scored four goals. Sophie Walter, Keim and Dowdy all had three goals.
St. James had a bye in the first round.
