The timing was just right when rivals Loris and Green Sea Floyds rescheduled a postponed baseball game.
With a large, enthusiastic crowd watching, Loris scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning Monday night, April 28, and rallied for a 5-4 win in a game that had the aura of a playoff atmosphere.
Layne Todd drove in the go-ahead run after McKinley Ray tied it with a two-out single. Four different Lions drove in the runs.
鈥淚 think it鈥檚 very important just kind of the way it worked out,鈥 said Loris coach Sean Lysowski. 鈥淔or whatever reason when we rescheduled, it was put at the end of the year knowing that the region is done and having a rival right there at the end. Tough environment. We talked about it. Those kind of wins, you鈥檝e got to have them to keep going.鈥

Loris is 15-7 and the Lions will finish second in Region 7-3A behind Aynor. The Lions will wind up the regular season on Wednesday at home against Marion.
The Lions weren鈥檛 the only team that benefited.
Green Sea Floyds (10-12) led a good 3A team nearly the entire game and the young Trojans showed they could be a problem in the 1A playoffs.
鈥淲e鈥檝e still got a long way to go,鈥 said GSF coach Bradley Strickland. 鈥淥ur goal from day one has been to get a little better every day and play as long as we can. Play two extra games, four extra games. Just play as long as we can.鈥
The Trojans start two seventh graders, two eighth graders, a freshman, a sophomore and three juniors. There are no seniors on the team.
鈥淲e are young,鈥 Strickland said.
Caden Rowell, a crafty junior right-hander, held Loris at bay until the sixth inning and was 2-for-3 at the plate.
Loris has managed to put together a successful season despite not having Coker-bound Jackson Huff on the mound. Huff had to recover from arm surgery and pitched his first two innings of the season last week. But Lysowski decided it was too much of a risk and shut him down. Huff is playing third base and batting.
Aiden Suggs and Hayden Day have been a formidable starting rotation for the Lions. But there have been opportunities for others to step up. One of them on Monday was freshman Ethan Hardee, who struck out two of three batters he faced to earn a save in a high leverage situation. Prior to Monday, most of Hardee鈥檚 outings had been with the junior varsity.
鈥淚 think it鈥檚 just a lot of courage, coming in as a freshman,鈥 said Hardee, who started at shortstop and had an RBI single. 鈥淚t鈥檚 confidence. You鈥檝e got to have confidence. It鈥檚 a rivalry game. We鈥檝e got to get ready for the playoffs next week.鈥

The timing was right for the emergence of Hardee as a factor.
鈥淓than Hardee, he鈥檚 a guy we鈥檙e going to look forward to in the coming years,鈥 Lysowski said. 鈥淲e鈥檝e got a lot of arms. He鈥檚 a young guy but he has it in him. Layne Todd was ineligible to pitch tonight because he threw so many the other day. Hayden Day is injured. Here鈥檚 your opportunity.鈥
Day banged up a knee but Lysowski said he should be able to play Wednesday.
Noah Lanier, one of the seventh graders, was 2-for-3 with two RBIs for the Trojans. The GSF catcher鈥檚 second RBI single off reliever Jagger Suggs gave the Trojans a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth and put the Lions in a more difficult position late in the game.
Then the Lions delivered and seized on the importance of it all.
鈥淩eally, it keeps your head up, keeps your momentum going,鈥 Huff said. 鈥淲e鈥檝e been doing a really good job hitting the ball. But the main factor is momentum. If we keep the rhythm going, and keep our heads up, we鈥檒l play hard and play good.鈥
That was a shared feeling.
鈥淚t gives us a lot of momentum heading into next week,鈥 Hardee said. 鈥淚 think this win will do a lot for us.鈥
Green Sea Floyds concludes its regular season on Thursday at Hannah-Pamplico.
