Carolina Forest has high hopes for a repeat of last season鈥檚 success, a season that saw the baseball team come within two games of playing for a state title.

Judging by the Panthers鈥 performance in a preseason tournament, they鈥檙e off to a good start.

The Panthers are 4-1 in season play so far after winning the International Paper Classic Championship in Georgetown, beating Greenville, JL Mann High School and Gilbert high schools for the title.

Carolina Forest also shut out Myrtle Beach in non-region play.

The real show, though, was in Georgetown where Carolina Forest beat JL Mann in a nailbiter semi-final that ended in a 4-3 decision.

Junior Bryan Johnson pitched for the win, throwing five strikeouts. Junior centerfielder Hunter Baiden got two hits including an RBI double in the fifth inning, which won the game.

Senior pinch hitter Caleb Lindaberry also had two RBIs in the game including a single and a double.

On Sunday, the Panthers faced Gilbert in the finals of the IP Classic. Senior Max Weatherwax pitched the championship game and threw five strikeouts, helping his team easily beat the Indians 5-1.

The Most Vaulable Player of the tournament was Senior catcher, Ryan Gold who went 2-3 at the plate and hit 2 RBIs. Seniors Hunter Baiden and Joey Lewandowski each had an RBI as well.

鈥淭he whole team played really well this weekend. Coming into the tournament ranked fourth we knew we were going to face some tough teams and we had to really bring our best game,鈥 said CFHS coach Jack Jolly. 鈥淭he boys did really well, from the pitching to the hitting. I am really proud of how they played this weekend. Hopefully this will keep up their momentum through the season.鈥

Carolina Forest High School had three players named to the IP Classic All Tournament Team, including Ryan Gold, Jared Lembcke, Patrick Orlando and Max Weatherwax.

Caleb Lindaberry was named to the All Academic Squad as well. 聽

鈥淲e are all proud of being named to the tournament team, but really I鈥檓 just happy that we won the championship,鈥 Orlando said. 鈥淲e played some really good teams this weekend and we did really well. I鈥檓 just looking forward to the rest of the season now.鈥

With seven returning players from last season鈥檚 district title team, Carolina Forest could have their eyes set on a state championship run.

The Panthers made it to the Lower State Finals last year before being abruptly stopped by Wando High School, which went on to win the Class AAAA title.

Carolina Forest will need the momentum they have gained from this win. The Panthers will be facing a tough lineup of competition over the next week, including St. James High School at home then traveling to Sumter and Socastee High School for region contests.
