Coastal Carolina golfers, coaches and supporters gathered on Wednesday, April 30, at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club in Myrtle Beach to watch the NCAA Tournament selection show on the Golf Channel.
They had to wait for a while as other regions were announced but, in the end, they felt it was worth it.
Clapping, smiles and cheers abounded when the Chanticleers were selected to the Bremerton (Wash.) Regional as the 12th seed.
鈥淚t鈥檚 perfect,鈥 said Coastal head coach Jacob Wilner. 鈥淚t鈥檚 exactly what I wanted.鈥
The tournament will be played at the Gold Mountain Club and some history shapes Wilner鈥檚 feelings.
鈥淚鈥檝e had experience in a previous job at that golf course,鈥 Wilner said. 鈥淚 think it suits our team very well.鈥
That鈥檚 a shared belief.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a really good course,鈥 said Chanticleer freshman Drew Sykes. 鈥淓veryone is happy to get there. We鈥檝e got a good shot to make the top five.鈥
The top five teams in the 54-hole regional, which is being played May 12-14, will advance to the NCAA finals. The championship will be played May 23-28 at the Omni La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, Calif.
Arizona State is the No. 1 seed in the Bremerton Regional, followed by Florida, Utah, South Carolina, South Florida, Colorado, Charlotte, Kansas, Colorado State, Kansas State, Elon, Coastal, Oral Roberts and Seattle.
The Chanticleers won鈥檛 soon forget how they secured the automatic bid from the Sun Belt Conference after a rain delay in the finals.
鈥淚t was the best rain delay in Coastal Carolina men鈥檚 golf history,鈥 Wilner said.
Coastal qualified for its first NCAA regional since 2018 in dramatic fashion at Annandale Country Club in Madison, Miss.

Coastal Carolina's Drew Sykes (left) was named third team all-Sun Belt Conference.
Sophomore Jack Lee sank a birdie putt on the first playoff hole after winning the last two holes in regulation to defeat Arkansas State鈥檚 Chris Somerfield. That gave Coastal a 3-2 win over the defending Sun Belt champions.
There was a rain delay before the ending drama and assistant coach Sam Harned told Lee to keep playing his game.
鈥淚 think it was very important to have Sam, the assistant coach, with me, during the delay,鈥 Lee said. 鈥淗e really made me a believer that it was still possible to win and all I had to do was stick to my plans, stick to the way I had been playing the whole round.鈥
Wilner was right there with Lee, too.
鈥淲e didn鈥檛 talk about golf,鈥 Wilner said. 鈥淲e talked about food. We talked about other stuff. He was comfortable. He went out there and won 17. Then he won 18. When we got to the 19th hole, the momentum was in our corner.鈥
Lee was steady with pars on 17 and 18 while his opponent bogeyed both holes to set up the sudden-death playoff.

And he won with a 35-foot birdie in a stunning way to conclude the conference championship.
鈥淭o be honest, I was so focused on just trying to hit a good putt that I didn鈥檛 really realize that it had gone in,鈥 Lee said. 鈥淚n the video of my reaction, I was not as emotional as what people thought I would be. It was just pure shock that went through my mind. It was a great feeling, though.鈥
It was a shot that will go down in Coastal Carolina golf history.
鈥淚 don鈥檛 know that I鈥檒l ever have a more electric moment than that,鈥 Wilner said. 鈥淔or all our athletes to be there and for him to make a 35-foot putt. Probably in 15 years that putt鈥檚 probably going to be 50 feet. The legend鈥檚 going to grow. It鈥檚 pretty spectacular.鈥
The joy spread throughout the team.
鈥淚t was a crazy turn of events,鈥 Sykes said. 鈥淚 think the rain delay helped us regroup. Jack played really well and he fully deserved it in the end. The way he won was so good for us.鈥
Coastal was the No. 1 seed entering the match play portion of the conference championship by having the lowest team score during 54 holes of stroke play.
The Chanticleers beat No. 4 Troy 3-2 in the semifinals, with Sykes defeating Nick Fowles 3 & 2 from the No. 5 position. Trey Crenshaw topped Pablo Garcia 3 & 2 from No. 1 and Max Bengtsson topped Jake Springer won 3 & 2 at No. 3.

Coastal Carolina golf coach Jacob Wilner greets Max Bengtsson, who was named Sun Belt Conference Newcomer of the Year.
In the finals, Sykes won 4 & 2 over Jake Lile and Crenshaw beat Jack Massey 5 & 4.
There will be closer regionals in Florida, Alabama and Virginia as well as Reno. The Chanticleers must go across the country. That doesn鈥檛 make things less desirable for the Chanticleers.
鈥淚t鈥檚 always a pain in the butt to get to,鈥 Wilner said. 鈥淲e鈥檒l get on a plane next Friday and head out there.鈥
