Coastal Carolina head football coach Tim Beck has now parted ways with both of the coordinators he hired on his inaugural staff after being hired in December 2022.

The university announced Saturday that Beck has hired 2024 Louisiana Tech defensive coordinator Jeremiah Johnson as the Chanticleers' new defensive coordinator.

He replaces Craig Naivar, who spent the past two seasons as Beck鈥檚 DC but 鈥渨ill not be retained for the 2025 season,鈥 according to a university press release.

Beck fired offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Travis Trickett in the midst of the 2024 season in October and largely took over his duties for the remainder of the season.

The hiring of Drew Hollingshead as the new offensive coordinator was announced on Jan. 1.

Hollingshead spent the last two seasons leading Western Kentucky鈥檚 fast-paced offense as co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, and is an 鈥淎ir Raid鈥 disciple of the late Mike Leach, with whom he spent eight years at Washington State and Mississippi State.

Coastal is Johnson鈥檚 fourth stop in four years.

He spent the 2023 season as the defensive coordinator at Northern Iowa following a one-year stint as the DC at Kent State. Prior to 2022, Johnson spent 15 seasons at Northern Iowa, including nine as defensive coordinator.

"Change is never an easy thing but we are excited for Jeremiah to bring a fresh voice to our defensive unit," Beck said in the release. "He's one of most innovative defensive minds in the game and his coaching style will complement our offense. Spring football and fall camp will be fun to watch as our new coordinators match up preparing for 2025."

Naivar has more than 30 years of experience, including in the Pac-12 and Big 12, and was on the same staff with Beck at Texas from 2017-19. He arrived at Coastal following a year as SMU鈥檚 special teams coordinator and safeties coach in 2022.

This past season, Louisiana Tech finished the season ranked 12th in the nation in total defense in FBS, allowing just 308.4 yards per game. The Bulldogs finished 110th in total defense in 2023.

They were also 26th in FBS in scoring defense with 21 points allowed per game last season, sixth in passing defense at 172.8 yards and 44th in rushing defense at 135.5 yards per game while going 5-8 overall and 4-4 in Conference USA.

This past season, Coastal was 107th in total defense with 413.8 yards allowed per game, 108th in scoring defense with 31.6 points allowed, 85th in passing defense at 227.8 yards, and 109th in rushing defense at 186.1 yards allowed per game.

Johnson is a native of Lawrence, Kansas, and 2000 University of Kansas graduate who earned a master's degree in athletic administration at Loras College in 2005.

He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant/video coordinator at Wyoming in 2002, was an assistant at Loras from 2003-2005, and started at Northern Iowa in 2007.

According to CCU鈥檚 release, during his 16 total seasons in Northern Iowa鈥檚 FCS program, the Panthers made the playoffs 10 times and advanced past the first round eight times.

At UNI, Johnson coached five Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Players of the Year, 15 AP FCS All-Americans, and one winner of the Buck Buchanan Award, which is given each year to the most outstanding defensive player in FCS, according to CCU鈥檚 release.

Johnson and his wife, Nicki, have a son and daughter.
