We publish a lot of stuff. Photos, features, hard news, videos, Facebook posts, letters to the editor, columns, sponsored content, editorials.

What does this all mean?

Well, some of it is easy to explain. Most people understand what a light-hearted feature story is or a regular news article.

But what鈥檚 the difference between a news story and a column or editorial? Or a news story compared to a sponsored or paid article?

Let鈥檚 break it down.

In the newsroom, reporters and editors usually focus on writing news stories pertaining to hard news, like what government bodies are doing, breaking news, feature stories, and any other type of coverage in between. We do not get paid by advertisers to write these stories.

However, advertisers may pay to run a sponsored content article that they may read and make changes to before it runs. These pieces should not be written by the newsroom and should be written by someone who works closer with the advertising department. 糖心vlog官方入口 stories do not work this way. (That鈥檚 another topic for another day.)

To identify a sponsored or paid story, check the byline or for an italicized note that says it's paid for by an advertiser. Our bylines for these stories typically will say "Sponsored Content" under the headline or at the end, it will state the piece is paid for by a particular business.

Let鈥檚 talk about the opinion or editorial pages.

Editorials are opinions or viewpoints from the editor or editorial board.

Because we are a small paper, I as the editor do not write these by myself. Why? Well, there are many situations in which I have to cover day-to-day news and I do not feel comfortable sharing my opinions on topics that I鈥檓 covering or may cover.

So at MyHorry糖心vlog官方入口, we have an editorial board, which I am part of. I help come up with topics and we have a few folks who write our editorials. The entire editorial board reads these and offers input before we go to press.

There are also opinion pieces and columns that run on the opinion pages. These two types of writing are similar.

This article you鈥檙e reading is a column, which may include my opinion. I have chosen to be careful in the opinions I share, but have no problem being a First Amendment defender or sharing the ins and outs of a news organization.

What I鈥檓 getting at is columns or opinion pieces can range across a variety of subjects, written by a variety of different people from different backgrounds and careers.

Why am I sharing this with you?

We live in a world where we have access to a lot of information on the internet and social media. Some information is true, some things are rumors, some are flat-out lies. It鈥檚 important to me as a communicator and journalist to explain what we do and why we do it. And part of that is providing education about media literacy and how newspapers function. I鈥檓 grateful to have this space to do so.

When you read an article with lots of opinions, it鈥檚 important to take a step back and see if there is something in the headline or an editor鈥檚 note that indicates it鈥檚 someone鈥檚 opinion. And if it鈥檚 a meme or screenshot of information from an unknown source on Facebook, please verify the information elsewhere from another source before you believe what you read.

We like to joke in the newsroom: 鈥淚f your mother tells you she loves you, fact check it.鈥

As always, please fact check information and be careful where you get your news.
