Judging from the number of antiques stores and resale shops in Horry County, it鈥檚 easy to see that people enjoy collecting.

Almost anything is collectible, if the finder finds it desirable or unique enough.

It鈥檚 likely, even, that the boy King Tut had some say in what he might have wanted in his vast funerary resting place.聽Much of what was found, eons after his death, was related in some fashion to his needs or pleasures in the afterlife.

Najgy, my mother, may have inherited the collecting gene through her grandmother Woolfolk.

Apparently, she was quite the collector of all things glass, namely a berry set which I now possess.

Though it may not have been through family characteristics, but merely to bring some beauty into a rough existence. Moving from one house to another with six children trailing along behind, there was little room left over in the moving truck for anything not necessary.

As she and I grew apace, one of our favorite places to visit on a聽Saturday聽afternoon was the local pharmacy/ice cream shop. There we enjoyed not only just the two of us being together, but also a double dip of ice cream served in an etched glass cup. Removable for easy cleaning, the cup rejoined its metal base to sit proudly on a glass shelf awaiting its next use.

We may have wanted, at another visit, an ice cream soda served in a tall clear glass receptacle, made by a 鈥渟oda jerk,鈥� which was usually a teenage boy, quite handsome and charismatic. 聽

Glasses such as these became part of my own collectibles later in my adulthood as a result of an auction, many years ago, held at Platt鈥檚 Pharmacy on Main Street in downtown Conway. However, it wasn鈥檛 the physical ice cream cups or the soda glasses that awakened my desire to collect either of them, but a memory to take out of my memory bank, a tangible object that awakened physical desire.聽聽

Perhaps that is what propels collectors to collect: to feel again those emotions that set them apart with meaning and purpose in the short space that is a life worth living. Our Lord prompted us to remember him in the chalice and the basket. Could this directive be the root cause of all our desires to collect?聽聽
