Granny's Florist

For 45 years, Granny鈥檚 Florist at 1225 16th Ave. in Conway has helped Conway residents celebrate and commiserate countless holidays, occasions and occurrences, showing up for the best and worst days of their lives.

And for 41 of those years, owner Steven Jones has been the man making it happen.

Jones first worked in a flower shop when he was a junior in high school, making deliveries, scrubbing buckets and cleaning stock shelves.

And in late 1983, he parlayed that experience into a job at Granny鈥檚 Florist.

Six months later, on June 7, 1984, the 20-year-old Jones bought the business, but kept the name.

鈥淣ot broke, not gonna fix it,鈥 he explained.

And with the exception of the occasional long holiday and vacation, he鈥檚 been hard at it ever since, working 50-plus hours per week.

He unlocks the door six days a week at the same store in the same strip mall, turning flowers into stunning floral arrangements. Granny鈥檚 has been voted Best Florist 17 times, including 14 times in a row, in the Horry Independent Readers鈥 Choice Awards.

In the beginning, Jones and his mother, Jackie, were the only employees. Jackie retired in 2016, and the shop now has five workers, including Jones鈥 sister, Christi Swain.

The showroom of Granny's Florist in Conway is colorful, bright and vibrant on Friday, May 30, 2025.

They have flowers and arrangements for all occasions.

Jones said he鈥檚 helped men get out of the dog house, including some men more than once. 鈥淚 could tell stories,鈥 he said.

He鈥檚 helped friends and families honor their dead with floral arrangements, more often than he cares to remember during the dark days of the pandemic.

And he鈥檚 brightened Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Memorial Day, Christmas, Easter, Halloween, Hanukkah and other holidays for generations of Conway families.

Through it all, he鈥檚 stayed abreast of the technology, taking orders online, posting to Facebook, accepting payment with the tap of a card.

鈥淚鈥檝e learned a lot of over the years. I鈥檝e followed the trends,鈥 he said, but maintained his own style.

鈥淓very designer has his own style,鈥 Jones explained, but the customer comes first, and he鈥檒l give those customers exactly what they want.

It鈥檚 been a continuing education. He鈥檚 attended numerous shows and seminars, and served as president of trade groups including the SC Teleflora Unit and the South Carolina Florist Association.

In the early years, the shop sold just flowers, plants and balloons.

But it鈥檚 grown in size to about 2,700 square feet when neighboring tenants moved out, and the inventory has expanded to include candles, gift cards, gourmet foods, home decor, art work, hand creams, caramels, body washes, silk florals and more.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a been a gradual evolution,鈥 he said.

But some things never change. A rose is a rose is a rose.

"Roses are the most popular, and that will never change,鈥 Jones said. 鈥淢en buy roses, red roses. They associate it with love.鈥

Some days are better than others.

鈥淚t鈥檚 not always roses and daisies,鈥 he said. 鈥淪ometimes it鈥檚 stems and thorns.鈥

Lately, tariffs have him on edge, since many flowers are sourced from South American nations like Colombia and Ecuador.

He said wholesale flower prices have already more than quadrupled since he got into the business, and now independent floral shops have a lot more competition, especially from grocery stores selling pre-packaged flowers of lesser quality.

鈥淎 lot of people want a flower shop experience at a grocery store price,鈥 Jones said, noting they鈥檙e asking for the impossible.

Grocery store flowers are cheaper, in every sense of the word.

Flowers from a reputable florist like Granny鈥檚 are purchased from established and reliable suppliers, and they're professionally prepared and handled through every step of the supply chain, extending their life and enhancing their appearance.

Simply put, they look good, they smell good, and they last a good, long time.

Just like Granny鈥檚 Florist.

鈥淚t鈥檚 been a good run, a great run,鈥 Jones said. "We really appreciate and love our loyal customers."

Just curious, who was the original owner of Granny's Florist? It seems that would have been mentioned in the story.
