The Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce's next leader was formally introduced to the community Thursday, April 10.

Matt Pivarnik, the next CEO and president, attended the chamber鈥檚 86th Annual Meeting at the Marriott Myrtle Beach Resort & Spa at Grande Dunes to meet the community ahead of his start date, which is scheduled for the middle of May, just in time for Memorial Day weekend.

鈥淚鈥檝e always had that opportunity to be able to work for an organization that has a strong chamber, strong visitors bureau, strong economic development organization, strong downtown organization 鈥 all the things that I find in the level of sophistication in the organization I am joining here," he said. "And I just really look forward to bringing some of my past experiences, but I think more importantly I look forward to learning, so I can be a better collaborator going forward."

Pivarnik visited the area from Kansas, where he served as the CEO of the Greater Topeka Partnership. He said he was transparent about his current stage in the onboarding process and wants to be a leader that learns as much as he can before directing orders. Pivarnik said his approach is metrics orientated and he examines metrics with respect to citizens, businesses, and visitors, seemingly in that order.

鈥淚f citizens are thriving, businesses are thriving. If visitors are thriving, businesses are thriving,鈥 Pivarnik said.

He has been in the community business industry for 26 years and said one of his greatest strengths is radical collaboration.

鈥淔or us to have strategies, but not just strategies that are just created by me or just the board, strategies that are informed by citizens, informed by other mayors, our county commission, other communities and just that radical collaboration," Pivarnik said. "I think that if we can all get on board with sharing strategies and sharing our metrics that we can have an opportunity to actually implement those as promised to our businesses and citizens."

He said this collaboration is based on building trust with integrity and ethics.

As for approaching a new economy with the recent tariffs by the Trump administration, he said it is a concern, he is monitoring the changes closely and does have strategies on how to tackle any upcoming economic issues. However, he said his opinion today may become a moot point because things are changing at the administrative level on a daily basis.

As for his first summer on the coast in Myrtle Beach, he said he anticipates he will be working a lot.

鈥淭he sophistication of the team that I am inheriting is off the charts. So, my excitement to be able to roll up my sleeves and work alongside them is really at a very, very high level. What I would do is get together with them and I guarantee that they have strategies already that I haven鈥檛 thought about because I鈥檓 new and we could put those strategies together,鈥 he said.

Tracy Conner served as interim CEO and president after the chamber's previous leader Karen Riordan resigned in June. Riordan had led the chamber since 2018.

Please make beaches accessible by working with Adaptive Surf Project. Make the beach wheelchairs available again. Everyone especially visitors should be able to enjoy the beach. As an amputee I have been able to go to the beach again and surf after 20 years of not being able to. Everyone should be able to feel the joy, not just able bodied people. Adaptive Surf Project has changed my life . There is also a contract between the city and ASP as to making the wheelchairs available. Please honor the contract. If I were a visitor and couldn't enjoy the actual beach, I probably would find somewhere else that I could. Thank you.
