Cell phone companies are continuing to install small cell poles around the city of Myrtle Beach, and more could be coming in hopes of boosting service.
Roughly 40 Verizon and AT&T poles are located within city limits. These vary in appearance, but can be noticed in rights-of-ways.
Two were recently erected at the 77th Avenue North beach access and at the corner of 68th Avenue North and Ocean Boulevard.
And more towers are in the permitting process, which is allowed by state law, city officials said. The law passed in 2020 allows wireless carriers to install poles in municipalities' rights-of-ways to help improve service.
鈥淚 believe the poles will greatly benefit the public because it will improve connectivity for AT&T and Verizon customers throughout the city,鈥 said Meredith Denari, Myrtle Beach spokesperson. 鈥淭his helps eliminate call drop zones and service issues where they may have existed before a pole was installed.鈥

Both of the carriers reviewed the Myrtle Beach market and determined where the poles, which vary in 4G and 5G technology, would be installed, Denari added.
AT&T was the first carrier to install poles in the city two years ago.
Verizon is also continuing to expand and upgrade its network in the area, said spokesperson Christina Moon Ashraf. The two most recent poles installed in the north end of the city are Verizon.
鈥淲e are currently working to add numerous 5G small cells to the area which means if we were to use a highway analogy, we are adding extra lanes to allow more traffic through,鈥 Ashraf said. 鈥淥ur engineers are working hard to get these sites on air by the end of the month.鈥

5G is powerful but does not travel far. As to why these are harmful to your health, see the articles on this topic at childrenshealthdefense . org
