North Myrtle Beach Mayor Pro Tem Jay Baldwin said when the Country Living Amish Store suddenly closed its doors, they left behind a yard filled with merchandise beside Highway 17 and no one has been there to clean it up.
The North Myrtle Beach City Council held a brief special workshop Monday afternoon, Aug. 4, to try to prevent such situations from happening again.
City zoning laws allow certain merchandise to be displayed in front of businesses such as vehicles, bicycles, landscape materials, newspaper racks, golf carts and other items.
Currently, hammocks and other items made to be used outdoors are also exempt from restrictions. These are the types of items left behind at the store located at 43rd聽Avenue South and Highway 17.
Zoning officials said they propose removing 鈥渉ammocks and other merchandise made to be used outside鈥 from the current ordinance.
Officials say outside displays may not exceed 20 percent of the building鈥檚 linear frontage facing the main highway and must not extend more than 10 feet from the front of the building.
Mayor Marilyn Hatley said she agreed with the new proposals and that it would also make it easier to keep up with landscaping.
The ordinance change must pass first and second readings to become law.
In other actions, the council appointed three new members to the city鈥檚 election commission.
Kathy Dukes, Scott Slater and Truman Williams were unanimously approved by the council.
Hatley said the city had received resignations from all three election commissioners and the upcoming city elections made it imperative to fill the slots.
鈥淲e have the city elections coming up and we needed folks who have election experience,鈥 she said.
