A boba tea shop in North Myrtle Beach underwent renovations and reopened as a chic hibachi cafe March 20.
The Cha House partnered with an experienced local chef earlier this year to expand its menu by adding hibachi, sushi, ramen and poke bowls.
After about a week and a half of renovations, the unit in the shopping center by S.C. 9 is now operating as Cha House x Shibuya Sushi and Hibachi with co-owners Heather Zanfardino and Pandu Sahudi.
鈥淥wning a space like this with good food and a good atmosphere, it鈥檚 like a dream come true,鈥 Sahudi said. He worked as a sushi chef in Myrtle Beach for 13 years and owns seven sushi counters in Food Lions throughout the area.
The Cha House operated the last two years selling boba tea and some authentic Asian cuisine dishes, like Pho. However, Zanfardino said customers were not gravitating towards the menu and might be more familiar with Asian-American dishes like hibachi. She connected with Sahudi through one of her dad鈥檚 partners at Cha House.
Sahudi said he鈥檚 been doing this a long time and this is exactly the kind of space he wanted. He also worked as a hibachi chef and manager at Lil Tokyo in the Coastal Grand Mall for five years.
The owners of Lil Tokyo, David Leigh and Sami Al-Taher, dined at the new hibachi cafe on opening day to support Sahudi and his new business venture.
鈥淭hey鈥檝e made it a nice restaurant, different from some of the little small hibachi places I鈥檝e gone to that don't have as many tables and don鈥檛 do fresh sushi in front of you,鈥 Al-Taher said. The two said Sahudi was great with customers and patrons loved him as their hibachi chef and they still work with him as he owns the sushi counter at Lil Tokyo.
Sushi is a popular restaurant dish, but Sahudi said it can be a difficult menu item for restaurants to manage. Sushi rolls require an advanced knowledge of types of fish in combination with other ingredients. The equipment and sanitation for preparing sushi is different from what standard kitchens carry. Many restaurants will outsource sushi operations and Sahudi can help find staff or provide the whole counter. With more than a decade's worth of experience as a sushi chef in Myrtle Beach, he is well networked with all staff in the local Asian cuisine industry.
鈥淎s a business owner, it definitely takes that headache away to not worry about that stuff. Pandu has a good reputation in sushi, so it was easy to say 鈥榊es, please,鈥欌 Al-Taher said.
Zanfardino worked as a dental hygienist and a food server for many years and said she was inspired to get into Asian cuisine because her father鈥檚 girlfriend is from Vietnam and the staff is very familial. She said much of the staff is still the same since reopening, and they have added a server, Annie Clark, with experience serving sushi at Lil Tokyo and in Las Vegas.
Sahudi recruited her husband, Odilio Lianez, with years of experience as a sushi chef in Las Vegas, to create the sushi menu at Cha House x Shibuya. Leigh, Lil Tokyo owner, said Lianez is very inventive and looks forward to exploring the menu he created.
The co-owners said the first day after renovating was a bit of a learning day, but Zanfardino said she really prioritizes speedy, friendly service.
The restaurant is located at 1516 Highway 17 N, #6, North Myrtle Beach, and is open from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, according to its Facebook page.
