Megan Truett named her newly opened florist shop and boutique Peony and Fig because the peony was one of the first flowers her husband gave her and the fig is the first tree mentioned in the Bible.聽
鈥淧eonies are a flower of faith, and that's my daughter's name, so it tells a story of us,鈥 Truett said. 鈥I do what I do for my daughter, just to one day, show her you don't have to go work for a big corporation or have this huge career. You're gifted, and God's gift has uniquely gifted you. And I just want her to show like I'm using my gifts and living it out on purpose.鈥澛
Truett was originally interested in opening a venue space, but that idea didn鈥檛 come to fruition. Instead, a friend asked her to design the florals for her wedding in November 2020.聽
鈥淚 didn't know how to do wedding flowers,鈥 Truett said. 鈥淪he's like, 鈥業 just trust you, whatever you deliver like I'm going to be so happy with because of your style.鈥 And I did her wedding, and from there, it became just a word of mouth thing where everybody just wanted me to do their wedding.鈥澛
Truett opened a brick and mortar shop in downtown Conway in July. While she typically avoids August weddings because the South Carolina heat is hard on flower arrangements, she designed florals for her first wedding since opening on Aug. 16. Next, she will arrange wedding florals almost every weekend in September and October.聽
Truett credits her faith and family for her newfound success in the events industry. She has two children, 14-year-old Faith and 10-year-old Knox. Her husband, Waylon Truett, co-owns District Collision 鈥 right around the corner from her own store 鈥 but still makes time on the weekends to help with events.
鈥淗e runs a business five days a week, but on Saturdays he comes and cleans candles and washes vases and carries heavy floral arches,鈥 Truett said. 鈥淚 obviously couldn't do what I do without him.鈥 聽
She describes her style as a florist as colorful and joyous.聽

鈥淎s much as I can appreciate just an all white, you know, elegance of a white palette, or that Southern blue and white, I definitely am a vibrant mix of all the colors,鈥 Truett said. It's just whimsy, organic, nothing is symmetrical, just like you just went into a big garden.鈥澛
Truett said she sources her flowers as locally as she can. She drives to Charleston once a week to pick up her blooms, and sometimes hits the Trader Joe鈥檚 to make a day of it. She tries to grow some of her own flowers, but said doing so gave her a newfound respect for local flower farmers, like Yuri Hana Flower farm, owned by Conway natives Charles and Bryan Hendrick.聽
As for the boutique itself, Truett carries unique home decor, like coffee table books, as well as clothes and jewelry.聽
Peony and Fig is open Tuesdays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. You can find Truett and her business at 1119 Third Ave. in Conway.
