Various departments from the City of Myrtle Beach dedicated their Friday morning to cleaning up debris at Futrell Park on Aug. 22.

The employee-led clean-up was launched by the Parks, Recreation and Sports Tourism Department to carry out some routine maintenance like litter pickup, weed removal, mulching, shrub pruning and general beautification.

Dustin Jordan, director of Parks, Recreation and Sports Tourism, said they try to come out once or twice a year to tend to the trees and overgrown azaleas, and fish trash out of the lake.

鈥淚 think it鈥檚 important to have multiple city departments and all these folks out here to really show that we care,鈥 Jordan said. 鈥淪how pride in the park and try to provide them a safe, nice space that they can come out and enjoy with their families.鈥

There is a contractor that tends to the park three times a week, but the debris that collects on the banks of the lake and tree limbs are not included in the contractor鈥檚 duties, according to Jordan.

Individuals from Myrtle Beach Fire Department, Public Works, City Hall, Neighborhood Services and the Chamber of Commerce grabbed gloves, litter pickers, trash bags and worked from 10 a.m. to noon.

鈥淭here are a lot of hands out here and a lot of hands make light work,鈥 Battalion Chief Dan Farrar said. 鈥淭his is a big job for a couple guys, but when you get this many volunteers out here to help it鈥檚 awesome to get to see progress right away.鈥

Fire Station 1 neighbors Futrell Park and Farrar said the crews will stand out in the bay while they鈥檙e cleaning the rigs watching people fish off the dock and children play in the playground. Thet even offer the children and adults tours of the station. So, the fire department was happy to come out and clean up the lake鈥檚 shoreline.

鈥淪ome people think that the fire department only puts out fires and handles EMS calls, but we are really here to make sure the community has the best experience in the city. This park in particular is important to us just because it happens to be right next to our firehouse,鈥 Farrar said.

Director of Neighborhood Services Cookie Goings said the city is a team that cares about its residents鈥 quality of life and clean-up days like this are necessary to take care of the environment in which we all live.

鈥淭he focus lately, or one of the focuses, has become on the parks in general. Be it Chapin Park, be it here, or Bathsheba [Bowens Memorial] Park, they all need extra attention. They all need extra attention and we鈥檙e trying to develop a system of consistency so that nobody feels neglected, if that is the feeling,鈥 Goings said. 鈥淭hat is definitely not our intention and once residents bring things to our attention, we have a responsibility to address it and this is just one of the efforts that we鈥檙e addressing.鈥

She added her dual role as a resident and city employee brings a sense of unity during the clean-up day.

Jordan said the residents in the neighborhood of Futrell Park lend a helping hand to the city as well.

鈥淭he residents around here are great," Jordan said. "They really do a good job kind of taking ownership of this park and keeping it clean, letting us know when there are issues. So, kudos to them. They really do a good job helping us out here as best they can.鈥
