It was 2009 when an ambitious young man took on the worthy cause of putting coats on the backs of children who needed them. That was the start of former Loris High School student Cobi Williams鈥 Cobi鈥檚 Coats for Kids.
And since Williams is not your average Joe, his plans morphed into the formation of "Cobi's Kids Foundation."
Now, Williams has expanded his territory for Cobi鈥檚 Coats for Kids, not only helping out his hometown Loris community, but aiding another local agency.
鈥淢y goal is to collect at least 100 coats for Foster-ing Hope for distribution at Coastal Carolina University in the Wall College of Business building Oct. 26 and another 200 for the separate coat distribution I am planning on doing in Loris,鈥 said Williams.
鈥淚 am aiming as always for early November distribution in Loris and hope to have the location and date pinned down very soon.鈥
Williams began collecting and donating new and gently used coats for kids in need as a high school project. To date, Williams, thanks to the generosity of others and his dedication to stay the course, has donated nearly 3,000 coats.
Championed by that success, Williams was inspired to do even more in his community, developing Cobi's Kids Foundation as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
It was formed to raise scholarship money for athletes as they pursue their athletic and educational endeavors. There are no administrative salaries for this foundation.
Cobi Williams, on behalf of Cobi鈥檚 Kids Foundation, presented 50 pair of swim suits and goggles to Patricia Tuite and Georgetown aquatic instructor Michelle Krenzer on March 10 at the Claire Chapin Epps Family YMCA in Myrtle Beach.
A coat drop-off point in Loris is the office of Maria-Elias Williams, on the corner of Main Street and Railroad Avenue in downtown Loris. For more information about drop times, call 843-756-8187.
