Horry County Schools is preparing for growth in the western part of the district by planning to purchase more land in the Aynor area.
At a Board of Education meeting on Monday, Aug. 25, the HCS Board approved plans to purchase a 66.7-acre tract off Enoch Road for roughly $1.4 million.
Enoch Road is located in the Upper Conway-Lower Aynor area, and while specific plans for the property are currently unknown, it is clear that Horry County Schools is aiming to prepare for the rapid growth taking place in the western part of the county.
According to HCS鈥 most recent functional capacity numbers, Aynor Elementary School was at 104% utilization and Aynor Middle School was at 103% utilization. Midland Elementary School (89%) and Aynor High School (77%) were under the 95% 鈥渞ed zone鈥 mark, however growth remains on the mind of HCS officials.
At Monday鈥檚 meeting, Superintendent Clifford Jones said Horry County Schools had 47,393 students enrolled and attending classes as of Aug. 25.
HCS implements new Linewize software
HCS Chief Officer of Student Services Velna Allen provided updates regarding HCS鈥 usage of the new Linewize monitoring system across the district.
Linewize will monitor school-issued devices both inside and outside of schools, as well as any outside personal devices that connect to the Horry County Schools wifi network. The goal of the implementation, Allen said, is to 鈥減rotect our children鈥.
Linewize will help the district and individual school contacts (there will be one for each school) be aware of any alarming student searches, key words, phrases or websites visited that trigger an alert to the system.
鈥淚f anyone asks you why we decided to go with Linewize monitoring, it鈥檚 to protect our children,鈥 Allen said.
鈥淲hen they see something that is an alert, they rank it on a scale of 1-5. One being the least severe, five being, 鈥極h my gosh, we have to do something quickly鈥欌 . Then, they will email an administrative contact at the school level if it鈥檚 a 1-3. If it鈥檚 a four or a five, they are going to pick up the phone and call that contact and they鈥檙e going to email them鈥 . Once we get that information, then at the school and at the district level, we will start researching and investigating and get the support that the student needs in those situations.鈥
Allen said a full rollout of the system is set for Sept. 8. The district piloted the software at two schools last year, with the monitoring being done at the district level rather than the individual school level.
Linewize describes itself as the 鈥渨orld鈥檚 most comprehensive suite of child cyber safety and well-being solutions.鈥 More information can be found
