A series of thunderstorms have rolled through Horry County in recent weeks.

Lightning struck in Horry County on Wednesday, July 31, hitting a house in Surfside Beach and a shed in the Conway area as a series of thunderstorms rumbled through the region.

Surfside Beach fire officials said firefighters were able to quickly extinguish a fire in the attic of a three-story dwelling after a lightning strike at 114 B 7th Ave. South Wednesday evening.

According to a post on the fire department鈥檚 Facebook page, firefighters encountered a haze of smoke emanating from the attic when they arrived.

Firefighters reportedly ran a hose up three stories to extinguish the fire, while others positioned themselves on a ladder truck over the roof in the event that cutting a ventilation hole in the roof was necessary.

Earlier in the day, Horry County Fire and Rescue extinguished a lightning-caused fire that damaged a shed on Hayloft Circle at about 12:30 p.m.

No injuries were reported in either incident.

Ian Boatman, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Wilmington said several storms popped up Wednesday. After 11:30 a.m. 鈥渋t really started blowing up there,鈥 with dozens of lightning strikes recorded.

The good new is, a change in the weather is expected after the county experienced rounds of severe heat that have caused NWS to post near-daily high-heat advisories.

After high temperatures in the low-to-mid 90s today and on Friday, Aug. 1, a cold front will move in, dropping daytime highs into the low 80s over the weekend.

鈥淚t will be some of the coolest temperatures we鈥檝e seen in a couple weeks, if not months,鈥 Boatman said.

There will still be a chance of showers and thunderstorms through the weekend, but lightning activity should be diminished by a stalled front boundary.
