The City of Myrtle Beach responded to a water main break on Harrelson Boulevard after the front end of a car fully submerged in the resulting trench around 4 a.m. July 29, according to the city.
The Myrtle Beach Police Department and Myrtle Beach Public Works tended to the incident at the entrance of Coastal Grand Mall and reported no injuries. The city said the car was removed and the hole was drained around 8:45 a.m.
鈥淎fter further inspection we found that the 12-inch water main failed,鈥 Infrastructure Projects Manager Chris Miller said. 鈥淭his line was just installed back in April or May of this year and it appears the material failed without any indication that there was an issue. There is nothing the city of Myrtle Beach could have done to prevent this.鈥
The area has been under construction for South Carolina Department of Transportation鈥檚 ongoing Ride III project. SCDOT said in a press release the entrance to Mall Drive will be closed while crews work to fix the entrance.
Officials anticipate repairs to last until Wednesday afternoon and ask drivers to seek alternative routes.
The water main repairs were completed around 1 p.m. Tuesday, according to the city. The opening date for the entrance is yet to be determined.
Miller added that no business operations were impacted by this incident.

I believe a closer inspection of the piping is necessary to ensure the pipe wasn鈥檛 damaged during installation to begin with. It鈥檚 rare that a pipe has a catastrophic failure on its own without help from whoever installed it.
