The contest is over for the South Carolina District 33 Senate primary race, and voters have selected 31-year incumbent Luke Rankin as the Republican nominee for the November General Election.
But Rankin's campaign is not over yet.聽He will next face a challenger in Democrat Pete John Bember on Nov. 5 in the General Election.聽
Unofficial results show Rankin, an incumbent who has served District 33 since 1993, won about 54% of the votes against opponent Autry Benton, a former Conway city councilman and concrete business owner.
"It is an affirming sense of an endorsement of what we're doing and the work that I've been trying to do and how I approach problems, how I approach the problems I have here," Rankin said after Benton called him to concede Tuesday night. "We got a lot to be proud of right here. Horry County is not one body led. The city, the county, the state, it is a collaborative work where we all have to work and pull in the same direction. I'm proud to be part of that team and continue to be a part of that team."
Just over 7,000 votes were cast in the race, with Rankin receiving 3,829 and Benton getting 3,248, according to unofficial results.
The 62-year-old is the chairman of the judiciary committee and also a member of the banking and insurance, education, ethics and transportation committees. Outside of senate duties, Rankin works as an attorney at Rankin & Rankin Law Firm in Conway.

Incumbent Luke Rankin, left, and Autry Benton, right, are both vying for the Republican nomination for the District 33 state senate seat in the June 11 primary.聽
The candidates, both Conway natives, were vying for the seat, which encompasses parts of Conway and Myrtle Beach, and Carolina Forest.
Benton, who entered the political scene during a Conway special election last year, did not seek another term on the Conway City Council in order to campaign for the District 33 seat.
Rankin said he admires Benton for running in the election.
"If he had a bigger purpose, this is where you try out," Rankin said. "There are other jobs that you get to run for whether it's the house or the senate. So I applaud his run. I applaud his gentlemen quality. He's a good guy. People know that he's a good guy."
When reached Tuesday night, Benton said he had conceded and congratulated Rankin.
"As we pause our quest for Senate District 33, we would like to thank every voter and supporter that has rallied around us so strongly," Benton said in a statement. "We truly believe in our message."
Benton's platform included better roads, infrastructure, and judicial and tort reform.
The winner of November's race will begin the four-year term in January.
