One person remains in critical condition after an officer-involved shooting along Myrtle Beach鈥檚 Ocean Boulevard that left 11 people injured and an 18-year-old gunman dead, the city鈥檚 police chief said during a news conference Wednesday, April 30.

鈥淒uring the incident, 11 individuals were injured as a result of gunshots and they were treated,鈥 Myrtle Beach Police chief Amy Prock said. 鈥淭he victims' ages ranged from 13 to 43 with 10 life-threatening injuries that have been treated.鈥

City spokesperson Meredith Denari specified after the press conference that 11 people were not directly shot, but that 11 people have gunshot related injuries. Gunshot-related injuries can include grazing, shrapnel or direct gunshots. 鈥淲e do not know the particulars of each victim's injury. SLED has not shared that information,鈥 Denari wrote in an email.

Mayor Brenda Bethune and Chief Prock held a press conference Wednesday to give an update on the deadly shooting that left an 18-year-old dead. Three Myrtle Beach officers were placed on leave in the aftermath of the shooting.聽

Bethune called Saturday鈥檚 shooting a 鈥渧ery, very sad and unfortunate event.鈥

鈥淭his is our home,鈥 she said. 鈥淭his is our community. This is not what Myrtle Beach is and this does not define who we are.鈥

Officer involved shooting - Ocean Boulevard

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating an officer-involved shooting along Myrtle Beach's Ocean Boulevard.聽Jerrius Davis, 18, of Bennettsville, South Carolina, died in the shooting.聽

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division took over the investigation and said 18-year-old Jerrius Davis was shooting into a crowd and was shot dead by police along the 900 block of Ocean Boulevard.

鈥淭his investigation is extensive,鈥 Prock said, adding she will not release information that compromises SLED's investigation.

As SLED investigates the shooting, many details remain unanswered, including how many shots were fired, the names of the police officers involved, the motive of the shooting, whether video footage of the incident will be released to the public and whether any of the gunshot related injuries were from shots from police officers.

Prock and Bethune described the shooting as a random act of violence. Bethune said violent crime in the Waterfront District overall is down and the downtown area is a safe place for tourists and residents to visit.

鈥淩andom acts of violence do not deter us from protecting our community. This random act of violence does not define who we are,鈥 Prock said.

Prock said officers were at the scene within seconds to render aid to those who were injured.

Bethune and Prock have said the city will release more information after SLED鈥檚 investigation.

On the night of the shooting, MBPD said officers saw a disturbance involving multiple people along the 900 block of North Ocean Boulevard just before midnight. 鈥淒uring the altercation, one individual began firing a weapon,鈥 MBPD said. 鈥淎t that time, based on the immediate threat, one of our officers responded by discharging their firearm.鈥

Davis, of Bennettsville, South Carolina, died after he was shot at 913 N. Ocean Blvd., said Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard with the Horry County Coroner's Office.

The shooting happened near a portion of the boulevard that temporarily closes this time of the year so police can set up shop, allowing police to increase visibility of the area.

The 鈥淪ummer Emergency Vehicle Access Plan鈥 is a traffic pattern that closes the northbound lane of Ocean Boulevard from 16th Avenue North to 9th Avenue North. The boulevard is completely closed to traffic from 8th Avenue North to 9th Avenue North.

A MBPD spokesperson said on Monday, April 28, that during anticipated busier weeks and weekends throughout the year, the department proactively addresses the increased demand on public safety personnel by 鈥渦p-staffing internally鈥 and coordinating with outside agencies in the area.

鈥淭hese partnerships allow us to enhance our presence and maintain quick response times,鈥 the spokesperson said.

City officials have said the summer traffic pattern leads to response times that are 30 seconds faster.
